The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 ended 41 years of division. A whole host of events commemorate this milestone in world history. One of the most spectacular celebrations is the Festival of Lights in Leipzig. It recalls the events of 9 October 1989 when more than 70,000 demonstrators in Leipzig confronted the security forces of East Germany ’s communist dictatorship with cries of “We are the people!” Across the country there are many other anniversary projects that commemorate the fall of the Berlin Wall.
