House of Art Munich

The House of Art in Munich's English Garden is one of the world's leading galleries. Every year, it hosts around eight exhibitions dedicated to contemporary art.

As one of the world's leading galleries, the House of Art hosts fascinating retrospectives on contemporary artists and special themed exhibitions. The gallery has a turbulent past of its own too, having been used as part of the propaganda efforts in Nazi Germany, when Adolf Hitler opened up the "House of German Art" as a museum and place of self-glorification. Traditional, academic art was put on display here, away from the "Degenerate Art" of the modern age.

Works that didn't represent the accepted traditions were confiscated across the country and confined to the infamous "Degenerate Art" exhibition just a stone's throw from the building. This is where no end of artwork by contemporary artists and groups of painters such as the "Bridge" and "Blue Rider" ended up. The House of Art was used by the US occupying forces as an officers' mess after the Second World War, before eventually being transformed into a museum for modern and contemporary art of international renown. Opening times: Monday to Sunday: 10 am–8 pm, Thursday: 10 am – 10 pm
