The museum has exhibitions on the history of the Jewish community in Augsburg and the rural Bavarian Swabia region and also contains religious and cultural artefacts.
The museum is housed in the Augsburg Synagogue, which was built between 1914 and 1917 and unites elements of art nouveau, Byzantian and modernist styles. The building was badly damaged during the 'Night of Broken Glass' in 1938 but was restored in 1985.
