With over 2,000 lakes and 1,900 km of beaches and steep coasts is Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Germany’s no. 1 aquatic region. Beatuiful sandy beaches and clean lakes invite to have a bath. The quality of the water is marvellous. Furthermore Mecklenburg- Vorpommern is the ideal destination for water sports.
Many of the most beautiful sites are discovered by hiking, biking and boating. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern ranks among the most modern tourism regions in Europe. Resorts, boardinghouses, campgrounds, water parks, and marinas are of the highest standards.
Seaside resort architecture
The first seaside resort was Heiligendamm founded in 1793. That was the beginning of the famous seaside resort architecture with white villas and impressive summer resicences you can find along the Baltic Coast line.
The Hanseatic League – the first European economic community – produced a phenomenal upswing for them during the Middle Ages. And everywhere in the proud Hanseatic towns, huge brick Gothic churches rose up to the sky. Stralsund and Wismar are both declared world heritage sites by UNESCO.
Castles and manors
In the princely residences and manor houses, everything revolved around a glorious display of power, magnificent castles, mansions, and gardens. There are said to be more than 2,000 of them. Schwerin Castle is the prima donna among them. The “Neuschwanstein of the North” is situated on a tiny island on Lake Schwerin.
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is a wellness region by nature and tradition. The conditions are excellent because the required nature materials are directly on site, e.g. Rügener healing chalk or Thalasso therapy.
Like treasure chests the towns of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern house exceptional cultural heirlooms. Cloisters, churches, royal buildings, art collections and many museums tell tales that seem right out of a storybook.
The trade by sea in the alliance of the Hanse and busy merchants ensured an immense upswing in the coastal towns in the late Middle Ages. As a sign of their power which could be seen from a long distance Wismar, Rostock, Stralsund and Greifswald built magnificent town halls and huge churches. The original medieval town centres of Wismar and Stralsund are UNESCO world heritage.
The brick gothic cathedrals built in the late Middle Ages towered above everything which had existed until then and even today they are still among the tallest houses of worship in the world. Moreover merchant houses with magnificent gables, and town halls with filigree spires show that the Middle Ages cannot have been quite as dark in this region as is often claimed.
Castles, parks and manor houses
The number of castles scattered about the state is astonishing. More than 2000 enchanting estates with fabulous grounds lie tucked away between the Baltic Sea and the Müritz. Magnificent manors now host guests, offering stylishly decorated rooms and exclusive gourmet meals in the best royal style.
Schwerin Castle is the prima donna among them. The "Neuschwanstein of the North" is situated on a tiny island on Lake Schwerin. Then as now, the magnificent building with its golden roofs is the enchanting focal point of this gorgeous region.
Seaside resort architecture and bathing tradition:
The bathing culture on the Baltic coast started in 1793 when Duke Friedrich Franz I. of Mecklenburg founded the first sea resort in Heiligendamm. Snow-white villa towns were soon established everywhere on the coast. And after just a few years everything of rank and fame met at the Baltic Sea. In 2007 the heads of the G8 states enjoyed the healing sea air in Heiligendamm.
The Imperial Spas Bansin, Heringsdorf and Ahlbeck on the isle of Usedom are especially pictoresque with the typical white villas, sea bridges and promenades. Of course you find many more resorts along the Baltic Coast and on the isle of Rügen.
The beach chair
The wicker beach chair is typical for Germany's northern coasts and was invented 125 years ago in Mecklenburg by a Rostock basket maker to protect noble people against the wind and sun.
The isle of Rügen
Germany’s largest island is often described as the most beautiful – idyllic bays, peninsulas and lakes; tree-lined avenues; rugged cliffs; and lush beech forests. You find lively resorts and tranquil villages. You shouldn't miss the famous chalk cliffs and a visit to the information centre of the Nationalpark Jasmund.
The countless lakes in the heart of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern are perfect for touring on the water. There are 5,000 in all when including the neighbouring German states of Brandenburg and Berlin. Europe's largest network of waters offers one-of-a-kind conditions for almost any boat class. Hobby captains and ordinary seamen can also explore the waters extensively without a coxswain’s license. The linchpin of this blue glory is the Müritz – Germany's largest inland lake.
At, on and in the water
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern offers a perfect combination of relaxation in nature. All types of water sport are feasible: fishing, swimming, diving, canoeing, water hiking, sailing, surfing, water skiing or driving a motor boat.
Cycling, hiking and horse riding
Cyclists, hikers and horse riders prefer this region because of its ideal landscape. Directive signs are set up along all paths while interesting sights and experiences can be expected everywhere.
Horse riding gets just like cycling special attention in this region. Riding farmsteads invite the whole family to special holidays full of fun and activity. They also offer outings with carriages for every occasion.

The relaxation and vitalising offers of the coastal region leave nothing to be desired. The equally agreeable and rejuvenating applications unite old, tried and tested methods with the most recent scientific findings and can often be booked inexpensively as parts of wellness, beauty and indulgence packages.
Spa treatments and health therapies
Whether healing chalk, thalasso therapy, iodine salts, oil and aroma baths, rhassoul, Kneipp or Asian therapies – the relaxation and revitalization possibilities of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern are boundless. The most modern of cure houses and therapy centers, as well as cure clinics of the international format provide opportunity for good health and relaxation.

Holiday makers can meander almost endlessly across the countryside on bicycle or by boat. The region is covered with well-marked trails, which for instance lead to brick churches, stately manors with stunning grounds and royal residences. You can find bicycles, canoes or house boats for rent all over the county. In October 2009 the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Tourist Board established the service department „Tourism for All“ which assists you with the planning and organisation of vacation for handicapped persons.
For over ten years, tourist facilities have been inspected regarding their degree of accessibility for handicapped persons in collaboration with the members of the association “ohne Barrieren” e.V. During this period, more than 4000 hotels, guest houses, museums, passenger ships, tourist information centres, theaters and other tourism facilities have been checked.
The association “ohne Barrieren” e. V. maintains an information portal where you receive more information about accessibility in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern:
Furthermore, the association maintains three separate institutions for barrier-free travel:
It doesn‘t matter if you prefer hiking, cycling, paddling, riding or driving in the car to discover Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, there are lots of exciting tourist attractions along the way.
Waldaktie („Forest Shares“)
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern introduced forest shares in October 2008. With the symbolic purchase of a tree or, better put, part of a forest, you as an environmentally-conscious holidaymaker could take the chance not only to become a part of the first tourism forest protection program but to make your holiday CO2 neutral.
For the price of a € 10 share, a hardwood tree can be planted and cultivated that will counterbalance a family of four’s carbon dioxide emissions while they enjoy their holiday. Aside from the possibility for you to safeguard the environment by counterbalancing your carbon footprints with the purchase of forest-shares, these shares will also provide an experience in climate protection themselves. The area invested in with the forest-shares will provide numerous people – who will be able to read presentation boards, go on tours, or attend educational events – with the chance to discover the considerable potential that cultivated trees can fulfil to better preserve our climate. Tourists can feel free to participate in this climate protection activity first-hand by planting their very own donated trees at regular tree plantations.
