A culinary foray through Stuttgart's gastronomy
The gourmet heaven over Stuttgart is a bright one: Baden-Württemberg's state capital boasts no fewer than seven starred restaurants. In addition, eight gourmet restaurants in the Stuttgart Region have received the Guide Michelin's culinary accolade.
But those who enjoy more down-to-earth fare will find plenty of choice here, too. Seven at a blow: Breitenbach, Délice, Olivo, Speisemeisterei, Restaurant Top Air, Wielandshöhe, Zirbelstube. The highest star – geographically speaking – shines over the "Wielandshöhe" restaurant owned by TV chef Vincent Klink. Up here you can enjoy not only fine food but also a wonderful view over the Stuttgart basin.
As far as food is concerned, the state capital has two sides to it, both equally appreciated by its inhabitants. Exquisite and highly decorated on the one hand, Swabian and down to- earth on the other. Lentils with Spätzle (Swabian-style noodles) are the Swabian national dish, and former German President Horst Köhler even had Gaisburger Marsch (a hotpot with potatoes and noodles) served in Bellevue Palace. Specialities such as Gaisburger Marsch and Maultaschen (filled pasta) demonstrate Swabia's legendary frugality at its best. The remains of the day land in the stockpot or are hidden in some kind of dough. The birth of the Swabian Maultasche has given rise to a great many legends. One claims that the Cistercian monks of Maulbronn Monastery (hence the name) were unwilling to go without meat during the Lenten season, so without further ado they concealed the forbidden food in a pasta dough.
Stuttgart is Germany's biggest wine-growing community and the only metropolis with its own municipal wine estate. Typical local grapes are the Trollinger, Lemberger and Riesling varieties. The wines produced in Stuttgart and its surrounding region need fear no comparison.
But also a wide variety of international cuisine can be found in Stuttgart and its region. A list of excellent Indian restaurants can be provided upon request.
