The Romanesque Route follows a figure of eight, with the state capital Magdeburg at its centre. Many of Europe's most important medieval buildings, such as cathedrals, churches, palaces, castles and abbeys, can be found here; historical sites, monuments and ruins attest to the region's political and commercial importance during the Middle Ages. These places are laid out ready to be explored, on hilltops and mountain sides, by rivers and in picturesque villages. Saxony-Anhalt, more than any other German state, is a treasure house of Romanesque architecture unmatched in its richness and breadth. Some 80 buildings in 65 towns and villages provide an in-depth perspective on the 'stone calendar' – the beginnings of German history – as well as on Romanesque art and architecture. Concerts, medieval fairs and art projects held in a variety of Romanesque settings recreate the ambience of the Middle Ages and provide another chance to learn more about Romanesque culture. Discover a region of cultural and natural attractions, a gateway to the Middle Ages when emperors and kings held court.
