German UNESCO World Heritage Sites Association

The German UNESCO World Heritage Sites Association is a collaboration between World Heritage sites in Germany and the tourism marketing organisations responsible for promoting them.

The German UNESCO World Heritage Sites Association is a collaboration between World Heritage sites in Germany and the tourism marketing organisations of the towns, cities, regions and federal states in which the sites are located.

Quedlinburg Old Town with the Burgberg and Münzenberg hills and St. Wigbert’s Church, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1994

The association was founded in Quedlinburg in September 2001, having previously been a marketing association. Its head office is also situated in the town, which itself is one of the 33 UNESCO World Heritage sites in Germany.

The GNTB has been a member of the German UNESCO World Heritage Sites Association since 2001 and is represented on the Management Board and Marketing Committee. It liaises closely with the association on product design and marketing for international target markets.

The aims of the German UNESCO World Heritage Sites Association are to:

  • raise awareness of Germany's UNESCO World Heritage sites;
  • promote low-impact and specialised tourism to the sites on a sustainable scale;
  • coordinate historic preservation and tourism;
  • continuously support the preservation of World Heritage sites through funds generated by tourism;
  • advise World Heritage sites in matters related to tourism marketing.

Members of the German UNESCO World Heritage Sites Association include:

  • tourism marketing organisations for towns, cities, regions and federal states with World Heritage sites
  • many of the organisations in charge of the World Heritage sites
  • German Commission for UNESCO
  • GNTB
  • German Foundation for Monument Protection
  • various sponsors.
