Berlin Marathon: sightseeing in running shoes

One million spectators and ten thousand runners: when the Berlin Marathon is on, the entire capital is on its feet. A marathon steeped in history through one of Europe's most exciting cities.

Things have changed a great deal since the first Berlin Marathon took place on 13 October 1974. Back then, there were just 286 applications from four countries and 244 runners finished the race. Anyone wanting to take part these days needs to apply early: the 40,000 allocated places for the main race are filled months in advance. And places for the fringe competitions – such as the mini-marathon, children's run, inline skating marathon and wheelchair race – are also in high demand. But the best thing about the Berlin Marathon is that you don't have to run yourself to feel part of it. Germany's biggest city marathon is a great experience for the spectators too. As well as lending their support along the route – which takes in the major sights of Berlin – they can also enjoy the Culture Marathon, the sports, health and lifestyle expo 'Berlin Vital' and the many other events, both large and small, organised as part of this sporting extravaganza. But it's not only during the marathon that the city is on its feet. Running events such as the half marathon, the Berlin women's run and, of course, the triathlon take place throughout the year. These events may not be quite as big as the Berlin Marathon but the atmosphere is just as special. You wouldn't expect anything else from the German capital!
