Welcome to Germany's largest nature park, where you can experience nature at first hand, whether by cycling, hiking or trying some typical Black Forest delicacies from one of the inns in the park.
The scenery here is characterised by a typical Black Forest landscape juxtaposing extensive pristine woodland with open meadows and pastures. Ice age cirque lakes and moors have become precious habitats to a range of endangered species such as the adder, pygmy owl and the Black Forest's signature bird, the capercaillie. The climate here ranges from almost mediterranean in the Baden winegrowing region on the western side of the park to almost Scandinavian at the 1,164 metre summit of Mount Hornisgrinde.
Whatever the season, the nature park is a paradise for activity-minded nature lovers, whether pedalling along the park's 260km cycle route, hiking one of the themed trails or snow-shoe walking in winter. The nature park's website provides details of all activities.
But don't leave the Black Forest without tasting its food and drink. Try regional specialities at any of the 50 cafés and restaurants to be found in the park. In summer, you can visit the markets or attend one of the 'farmyard brunches' that take place on the first Sunday in August. And don't forget to try the range of specialities from the Echt Schwarzwald (Black Forest Originals) range. The nature park also hosts food festivals in autumn and winter.
