It took Phileas Fogg and his valet Passepartout 80 days to circle the globe in the Jules Verne tale. Luckily, you won't need that long to travel the world at the informative and interactive exhibition at Klimahaus Bremerhaven 8° Ost.
What does Bremerhaven have in common with the deserts of Niger, the South Pacific state of Samoa and St. Lawrence Island in Alaska? They are all located on the same line of longitude: 8 degrees east. Yet the living conditions experienced by the people in these climate zones vary wildly, with aridity and heat in Niger, tropical cyclones on Samoa and melting glaciers on St. Lawrence Island. The 11,500m² exhibition at the Klimahaus tells you all about these challenging climates. The Journey, as the main interactive exhibition is called, takes two to three hours, passing through nine locations on five different continents. You'll walk for around one kilometre – as opposed to the 40,000 kilometres it would take to complete the route in reality. Besides the Journey, the Klimahaus has three other fascinating exhibitions, which shed light on climate topics through a whole host of interactive stations. From the dry heat of the Sahel belt, across the pack ice of the Antarctic and on to the coral reefs of Samoa, each station provides authentic insights into life in the major climate zones.
Klimahaus Bremerhaven 8° Ost, at the heart of Bremerhaven's Harbour Worlds complex, is a unique world of discovery exploring climate systems, climate change and weather. Not only does it capture the atmosphere of each country, it also simulates their climate. From the blistering heat of the desert to the sub-zero temperatures of the South Pole, you can experience all of the Earth's climate zones in a single afternoon. The simulation of the West African rainforest at night offers fantastically exotic scents and sounds – as well as insights into deforestation. Torrential rain and lush vegetation await on the island of Samoa, before the journey continues through the incredible aquarium with its magnificent fringing reef of living corals – the excitement never stops!
Aside from the round-the-world tour, the Klimahaus also features a science centre with lots of experiments related to earth, fire, water and air. You'll be so amazed and impressed, you'll want to come back for more!
