Rammelsberg Mine and Museum

Goslar

1,000 Years Of Production Frozen Now In Time

The first UNESCO World Heritage Site recognised for technology in Germany, the Rammelsberg Mine was given the honour as it encapsulates 1,000 years of mining technology and progress. From the water-powered systems with huge 9-metre water wheels in huge caverns chipped by hand in stone to help remove the ore containing silver, copper, lead and zinc to the revolutionary processing system developed in the 1920s, this is a vast and amazing experience. You can travel deep underground to see the shafts. The very brave can do the Adventure Tour in medieval shafts! Highly recommended. I loved it

Marktplatz Goslar (Marketplace Goslar)

Goslar

Authentic Medieval Market Square. No Surprise A UNESCO World Heritage Town

Goslar is a UNESCO World Heritage site due to the preserved Old Town which includes many part-timber clad buildings in its 2km by 1km area. The Marktplatz (Marketplace) is magnificent, surrounded on all sides by buildings dating back centuries. All spared the usual destruction many historic towns suffered in WWII. The Town Hall has magnificent stained glass windows in its large meeting hall and another covered in rich mural paintings. In the centre of the square is a bronze fountain with gold bird. The famous Christmas market is held here every year. Visit!

Imperial palace

Goslar

Grand, Imposing and Beautiful Imperial Palace. Breathtaking!

The dramatic Imperial Palace in the World Heritage City of Goslar in Harz region of Germany stands on top of a steep green hill with a long walkway up towards it, meaning you have to stare up at the grand building with its huge statues looming above you as you make your way towards it. Clearly designed to impress, it is an imposing sight overlooking Goslar. It was dates back to the 11th Century and has seen over 13 Kings and emperors hold court over the centuries. Now it is a vast and fascinating museum packed full of amazing artworks and exhibitions covering history of the region. A must-see!
