Student Fraternity Houses

Heidelberg

Spot the Fraternity Houses

As an alternative to taking the funicular up to Schloss Heidelberg, walk up the hill past the many student fraternity houses. You’ll recognise them as large mansions that usually fly a flag of their fraternity and have a brass plaque with the fraternity name. These fraternities originated over the last centuries and were like an exclusive club that students from the best familes would belong to, often following in the footsteps of fathers and grandfathers. They provide a residence for the students of the fraternity and are maintained by past fraternity members. photo: Heatheronhertravels.com

Vorbach Chocolates

Heidelberg

Handmade chocolates from Heidelberg

In the Kornmarkt square of the old town in Heidelberg we discovered a small chocolatier where the owner Hugo Vorbach was filling handmade chocolates. They sell very pretty and delicious chocolates, some with fresh cream and no preservatives that you can buy in small quantities for a little treat or in pretty tins as a souvenir to take home. The Red Ox Inn - Zum Roten Ochsen

Heidelberg

The Red Ox is a favourite old fashioned students pub with dark panelled wood, hunting trophies and yellowing photos of past students around the wall. It is popular with tourists but we found the service was very friendly and the traditional German dishes and beer were pretty good. For the best atmosphere I’d try to sit in one of the inner rooms. photo: Heatheronhertravels.com

Heidelberg Castle

Heidelberg

Schloss Heidelberg - the romantic castle on the hill

This is the must-see attraction of Heidelberg, build up since the 13th century for the Prince Electors who ruled the Palatinate region and Heidelberg. War and fire reduced it to a ruin and now most of it is impressive carved stone facades around a courtyard with not much to see inside. Look out for the giant wine barrel in the cellar, the ornate gateway built as a birthday present for Elizabeth Stuart and the knight’s footprint (as well as the views) on the terrace. Worth getting an audio guide or taking a tour to hear all the stories. The picturesque ruined castle on the hill was an inspiration for the romantic poets and writers of the 19th century, painted by Turner and visited by Mark Twain. Photo: Heatheronhertravels.com

Restaurant Goldener Hecht

Heidelberg

Hearty German cuisine at Goldener Hecht

We enjoyed a hearty traditional meal at Goldener Hecht, right by the Old Bridge in Heidelberg. The outdoor café terrace looked like a fabulous place to sit and people watch in summer. Since it was cold we found a table in the cosy restaurant with wood panelling and painted murals. We enjoyed the boiled veal in bouillon served in a copper pan with vegetables and roasted potatoes and onions on the side. We heard the story of how the revered writer Goethe had ‘almost’ stayed here – he called to enquire about rooms but none free! photo: Heatheronhertravels.com

Heidelberg Bonbon Shop

Heidelberg

Fruity lollipops and candies at the Bonbon shop

In the street leading to the Old Bridge there’s a Bonbon shop selling colourful candies with many different fruity flavours. You can often see them making the sweets and lollipops in the shop. They were selling pretty striped candy canes and jars of sweets as well as more unusual Darth Vadar lollipops for kids. photo: Heatheronhertravels.com
