The southern Black Forest is one of Germany's most beautiful recreation areas. Peaks with stunning views, traditional local farms, dense forests – a captivating mix of nature, culture and tradition.
Germany's largest nature reserve lies on the borders of Germany, France and Switzerland, stretching north to Triberg with its celebrated waterfalls, southwards as far as the High Rhine, eastwards to Donaueschingen, site of the legendary source of the Danube, and westwards to Freiburg with its wonderful cathedral and water-filled channels running through cobbled streets.
The juxtaposition of open countryside with dense forest is typical of the region, and grand farmhouses and small villages can be found throughout. Then there are oases of nature such as moorlands and cliff-faces rich in flora and fauna. The highest peak is the 1,493m Mount Feldberg – a paradise for nature lovers, hikers, mountain bikers and snow-shoe walkers. The lakes left behind by the ice age, such as Lake Schluchsee, Lake Titisee and the mysterious Lake Feldsee, are especially romantic. Another jewel of the area is the cavernous Wutachschlucht gorge, often referred to as the Grand Canyon of Germany.
The Southern Black Forest Nature Park can be explored by bike on the Southern Black Forest Cycle Route, on foot on one of the premium Geniesserpfad hiking trails or, if you have children, on one of the entertaining experience trails. Local specialities can be tried at one of the nature park's many markets, the restaurants and inns, or at the farm gate along the trail known as the Cheese Route. Many of the amenities are wheelchair-accessible.
The Southern Black Forest Nature Park extends you the warmest welcome – we look forward to your visit.
