500 years since the Reformation
Even back in Luther's day, student life shaped Heidelberg, Germany's oldest university town. Here, in the rooms of the university, the great Reformer presented his beliefs to the Augustinian Order in 1518, shortly after nailing his theses to the door of the castle church in Wittenberg.
Members of the university were also present. While many of the older professors criticised Luther's ideas, the students and younger members of the university were enthralled by the fiery Luther. Many of them later became friends and supporters, who spread the Lutheran ideas, mainly in southern Germany. Due to their influence, the Reformation was introduced relatively early in this region.
Today a large memorial plaque embedded in the ground on University Square, where the Augustinian monastery once stood, commemorates these important first steps of the Reformation.
Overlooking the city and the river Neckar, Heidelberg Castle is the epitome of German Romanticism and one of Europe's most famous landmarks. You can enjoy particularly beautiful views of the castle ruins and the picturesque old quarter on the two-kilometre Philosophers' Walk. In contrast to historical Heidelberg, the Mannheim-Heidelberg International Film Festival offers a look at what's new in the world of cinema.
