Old Town Hall with the Imperial Diet document collection

For centuries the town hall was the beating heart of the free imperial city of Regensburg.

This was the workplace of councillors and administrators and it was here that the courts – complete with jail and torture chamber – were located. Between 1663 and 1806 the town hall also served as a meeting place for the Perpetual Imperial Diet, which brought major players in German and European politics to Regensburg. The atmosphere of the Diet still pervades the Imperial Hall and the meeting rooms – one of the main reasons that Regensburg was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
