The tourism consultancy Destinet reports that around a dozen hiking trails received the Wanderbares Deutschland quality certificate at the CMT travel fair in Stuttgart. Minimum standards for the infrastructure of these premium walks include surfaced footpaths, well-maintained tracks and guaranteed waymarking in accordance with sustainable practices.

In addition to its hiking trails, Germany has more than 200 long-distance cycle routes that are hugely popular with visitors from abroad.
