Mainz: Media, medicine and more.

Mainz is the capital of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate and benefits from a central location in Germany close to the Frankfurt metropolitan region. The city has an impressive track record in several areas of research: media and communications, medicine + healthcare, chemicals + pharmaceuticals and renewable energies.

Ever since the printed book was invented in Mainz by Johannes Gutenberg, the city has occupied an important position in the area of media and communications within the competence field technology + innovation. Two major broadcasters, ZDF and Südwestrundfunk, are a magnet for many film and television production companies such as Filmfabrik Wagner in Ingelheim or TV Skyline. Since 1968, the annual Mainz Television Criticism Conference has made the city the venue of the most important forum for media professionals and journalists. The presence of important organisations such as the German Printing and Media Industries Association (BVDM) in Wiesbaden and the VRFF - Union of Radio, Film and Television Workers as well as renowned research institutes, including the Institute of Media Design and the Institute of Film Science & Media Dramaturgy at the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz confirm the position of Mainz as one of the leading media centres in Germany.

Mainz is also strong in the area of medicine + healthcare: international players such as Philips Electronics, the world-wide leader in the healthcare sector, Siemens, Medtronic, Abbott, Boston Scientific and Cordis, the Community Research and Development Information Service of the European Union, have settled around the medical faculty of the Johannes Gutenberg University. The large number of annual medical conventions and the work of a whole raft of research institutes make Mainz one of the strongest clusters in medicine + healthcare technology in Germany.

In this environment, the competence field chemicals + pharmaceuticals is also able to show its strengths. Mainz is a preferred location particularly for the pharmaceutical industry. Novo Nordisk, Boehringer Ingelheim and Ganymed Pharmaceuticals are among the giants of the sector as well as the research companies and institutes Galantos Pharma, Unicell, the Institute of Industrial Pharmacy (IIP) and the Institute of Pharmacy and Biochemistry - Therapeutical Life Sciences at the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz.

Innovation is written large in another competence field in Mainz: the city is well positioned in energy + the environment – particularly in the area of renewable energies. With juwi Holding, Schott Solar, RIO Energie and First Solar, the world's largest manufacturer of thin film solar modules, Mainz is home to some of the most important companies in the solar and photovoltaic industry. Regenerative and efficient energy systems, technical environmental protection and energy and process technology are key focuses of two universities of applied sciences in the region: UAS Bingen and UAS Trier, Birkenfeld.
