The Monks' Trail combines sprawling marshland and Holstein Switzerland with the ecclesiastical history of northern Germany. There's plenty of time for quiet contemplation with more than 100 churches along the way.

Starting off at St. Peter's Cathedral in Bremen, the route takes cyclists across the River Wümme and on to Zeven and Braken Forest. This marks the start of the Altes Land region, Germany's largest fruit-growing area, which extends almost as far as Stade. After crossing the River Elbe in Wischhafen, the route proceeds through the Barker Heide nature preserve and the Trappenkamp discovery forest. The first hills mark the start of Holstein Switzerland. The nearby Baltic Sea is the perfect place for a swim, and a leisurely stroll around the old harbour towns of Neustadt in Holstein and Heiligenhafen is quite a treat. The route ends in Puttgarden on the island of Fehmarn. Or there's the option to carry on to Rødby or Roskilde in Denmark.
