Westerwald Trail - Through a forest made for walking

The Westerwald Trail zigzags uphill and downhill on its route from the Dill river to the Rhine. Awaiting in the Westerwald forest are dramatic gorges, idyllic valleys, medieval villages with brightly painted houses – and an adventure of Alpine proportions.

The Westerwald forest is bounded by the Rhine, Sieg, Dill and Lahn rivers between Cologne and Frankfurt. It the largest single expanse of woodland in Rhineland-Palatinate. The Westerwald Trail runs right through the heart of this beautiful landscape. From east to west, it traverses eight distinct natural environments: over 16 day-long stages, the Westerwald Trail runs from the Hessian town of Herborn via Fuchskaute hill (657m), the highest elevation in the Westerwald. The Krombachtal dam and the Holzbach gorge are other highlights along the trail, which leads on past the Westerwald Lakes and the Stöffelpark (the largest basalt quarry and fossil site in the Westerwald) towards Bad Marienberg and Hachenburg. On the route to Waldbreitbach, which takes you through the idyllic Wiedtal valley, you’ll come across Marienstatt Monastery and the area of Marienthal, as well as the legacy of cooperative pioneer F. W. Raiffeisen, before the Westerwald Trail comes to an end in Bad Hönningen/Rhine. Adventurous walkers will enjoy stage 13 of the tour, which offers a genuine challenge. Close to Hölderstein, in the foothills of the Middle Rhine slate mountains, some 80 metres have to be climbed over a length of only 300 metres using climbing aids, stirrups, spikes, three ladders and a bridge. This via ferrata can only be tackled using proper climbing equipment and is done so at your own risk.
