Bonn was capital of the Federal Republic of Germany from 1949 to the mid-nineties. The Jews of Bonn were massacred in 1096 during the First Crusade – but as the centuries progressed, Bonn Jewry was re-established and grew. The 18th-century synagogue was destroyed on Kristallnacht, and a new Jewish community was founded after World War II. The new Bonn Synagogue opened in 1959 and quickly grew in importance.
