Hechingen

Jewish life in Hechingen, 40 miles south of Stuttgart, was mentioned in local records for the first time in 1435. By the mid-19th-century, the Jewish population amounted to 25% of the town’s inhabitants. The interior of the Hechingen Synagogue was completely destroyed on Kristallnacht. In 1982, the wrecked building was restored as a center for teaching the region’s residents about Judaism, Jewish history and culture. In 2001, the city of Hechingen set up a Holocaust Memorial.
