A significant Jewish community lived here from the early 18th century until the remnants were departed to Vichy France in 1940 and ultimately to Auschwitz. The former Jewish school house and rabbi’s home date from 1845 and have now been restored – along with the ancient underground mikveh – as a Museum Documenting Jewish Life in Gailingen. A memorial tablet recalls the destruction of the Gailingen Synagogue on Kristallnacht and the deportation of the remaining Jewish community in 1940.
