Munich Airport was voted Central Europe’s Best Airport at the World Airport Awards 2012. This accolade is the result of a survey of more than 11 million passengers worldwide conducted by the London-based research institute Skytrax. Munich has won this award seven times.
Munich Airport continues to rise in the rankings of Europe's most important hubs: Bavaria's gateway to the world handled some 38 million passengers in 2011 and secured the number six position among Europe's busiest 10 airports for the first time. With a massive 9 percent gain in total passengers, Munich was Germany's fastest-growing airport last year. Since its opening in 1992, the airport's annual passenger numbers have more than tripled. Passengers from more than 216 destinations in approximately 61 countries arrive here. No other major European hub can rival Munich's minimum connecting time of just 30 minutes - offering connections to an extensive range of destinations within Germany, Europe and beyond.
More than 200 stores and restaurants make the airport a shopping paradise. The airport also excels when it comes to food and drinks, and boasts the world’s first and only airport brewery – Airbräu. In addition, a wide range of events takes place at the airport every year, from surfing championships and beach volleyball in summer to a Christmas market in winter. “Service nonstop” is the impassioned goal of Munich Airport. With a clear signage and user-friendly layout, passengers find their way quickly and easily around Munich Airport. Special transit screens at the arrival gates display connections relevant to the disembarking passengers. For literally nonstop service, service centers in Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 are open 24-hours to serve the passengers with such as luggage storage, dry cleaning, travel health insurance, lost and found, fax service and ticket sales for public transportation. Internet points, wireless LAN access, a child day care, baby changing facilities and free showers complete the airport’s comprehensive service portfolio.

Munich Airport offers lots of entertainment for smaller passengers. Munich Airport's Visitors Park is the ideal destination for an outing for aviation fans of every age. In an area especially designed for children, MUCi the mascot explains the operations of an airport to the youngest guests. Outside historic aircrafts and a rescue helicopter can be seen. A large playground and the new mini-golf course are waiting to be explored. Numerous Kiddieland kid’s play corners can be found in the terminals. Another attraction is the viewing hill in the Visitors Park. Kids can climb up 172 steps to the viewing platform on top overlooking the airport.
The Air Berlin Kinderland, which is located in the Munich Airport Center between both terminals, offers another highlight for kids. 3 to 10-year-old children play free of charge under the supervision of the trained staff while their parents can relax, check-in or can go shopping at the airport's abundance of stores. Many attractions are offered for children: a corner for arts and crafts, a climbing tower with a ball basin, giant soft Lego blocks, computer games, board games and a children’s cinema where they can watch movies together in different languages.
The youngest travelers at Munich Airport's Terminal 2 can now board their own aircraft in the waiting area before departure. The new indoor playground, with an area of nearly 600 sq.ft., was created by the children's charity SOS Kinderdorf and the Terminal 2 operating company, which is jointly managed by Munich Airport and Lufthansa. The model, which is 6 meters long and has its own departure gate and a miniature tower, was developed by early childhood education experts. Children can climb and explore the model aircraft to their hearts' content to let off steam before their flight is called. Parents can watch the fun while relaxing at the adjacent restaurant.
Furthermore Munich Airport provides many captivating attractions such as a Christmas Market in winter or a surfing event in summer.
A massage services awaits passengers near the gates of Terminal 2. Or pay a visit to the Kempinski Airport Hotel’s Fit & Fly Health & Spa Club to tone up or relax in the sauna or pool.
