What was only a ruin after World War II rose anew between 1993 and 2005 thanks to donations from all over the world. Today, as in old times, it represents the perfection of church construction according to Luther’s ideals. After its renewed consecration the Church of Our Lady in Dresden (Frauenkirche) once more took its place as top class musical venue. Naturally, music events taking place throughout the anniversary year 2017 will focus on the Reformation as well. Therefore, the Frauenkirche has invited prominent artists and even asked the composer Jörg Herchet to write a new composition basing on a famous hymn of thanksgiving by Martin Luther that will première on 24 June.

In 2017, the year of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, a further section of the Renaissance wing will be opened: the east and north wing of the first floor will, for the first time, become home to the world’s largest collection of ceremonial weapons and costumes from the Reformation and early Baroque periods.

These embodied the claim to power of the electors of Saxony and the doctrinal principles of the Reformation, and they are among the oldest objects in the Rüstkammer.Ornate weapons, horse trappings, textiles and portraits of princes will illustrate the development of the House of Wettin from the acquisition of the Saxon electoral privilege by Friedrich the Pugnacious in 1423 up to the winning of the electorship for the Albertine line of the House of Wettin by Duke Moritz of Saxony in 1547, and through the reign of his brother August.

Original costumes held in the Rüstkammer that were worn by the electors of Saxony in the period from about 1550 to 1650 illustrate the luxurious princely fashions of the Renaissance and early Baroque, such as are otherwise seen only on portraits of the great rulers of that era.

Owing to their certain provenance, the outstanding craftsmanship and artistic quality of the textiles, their value as an ensemble, their dynastic importance, their international character, their period and their impressive state of preservation, the stately garments preserved in Dresden are ranked as a significant element of European cultural heritage under the category “Renaissance and early Baroque fashion and textile art”.
