The Breminale, the huge arts festival in Germany's smallest federal state Bremen, has been held on the Weser riverbank every summer for around 25 years. Excitement reaches fever pitch in the red and white striped tents, on and around the stages and everywhere else on this festival site which stretches for almost a kilometre, as around 100 bands entertain hundreds of thousands of visitors with an extremely diverse and thrilling programme.
This Weser riverbank festival is a success story – and the reputation built up by the Breminale over the last few decades is fully deserved. It's not a complicated formula but the secret lies in engaging top-class artists and constantly coming up with fresh ideas and surprises for people walking to and from the stages. Right through from midday to late at night, jugglers and entertainers, independent theatre troupes and traders, outdoor art, a children's programme, an open-air big screen, dance, literature and readings are as much part of the festival as a vast array of international food and drink. It's the mix of different cultural strands that makes the Breminale atmosphere unique. Perhaps the free admission to every event makes everything just a touch sweeter and contributes to the light and airy festival vibe. Ever increasing visitor numbers are the best recommendation.
