Das FEST music festival in Karlsruhe is one of Germany's biggest open-air events, attracting over 200,000 visitors. It has been held every year in late July since 1985 – on the last weekend before the start of the school holidays in Baden-Württemberg.
If the atmosphere at FEST is on a par with Karlsruhe's famously good weather, it's probably due in part to the concept behind the festival, which really does aim to appeal to everyone and puts child-friendliness high on the agenda. Whilst the grown-ups get rocking, kids can have fun in the fully supervised play zone, playing, splashing and tumbling in total safety – this is what sets FEST apart from all other festivals. For slightly older children there's an amazing choice of fun sports, and they can compete in the FEST Cup for skateboarding and fingerboarding. But FEST is about the music too, and anyone who's ever held a mike here – or a guitar – is among the best in the rock and pop business: Juli, Silbermond, Faithless, Fury in the Slaughterhouse, Apocalyptica, Guano Apes, New Model Army, BAP, H-Blockx, Simple Minds and Die Fantastischen Vier have all headlined at FEST in the past. The organisers' environmental policies and award-winning transport concept have also earned FEST the Green'n'Clean Award from YOUROPE – the European Festival Association.
