Lucas Cranach and the Subjects of the Reformation

Exhibition in the Museum der bildenden Künste with works by Lucas Cranach the Elder and his son, Lucas Cranach the Younger, who are among the most important artists of the Reformation period and the German Renaissance.

Lucas Cranach the Elder, who was born in 1472 in Kronach, Upper Franconia, and died in 1553 in Weimar, and his son Lucas Cranach the Younger (1515–1586) are considered amongst the most important artists of the Reformation era and the German Renaissance. Cranach the Elder founded a very successful workshop with branches in Wittenberg and Weimar, which filled orders for the ruling house of Saxony and reformers such as Martin Luther as well as for Catholic dignitaries. The Leipzig Museum of Fine Arts presents this explosive range of Reformation-era patrons with its extraordinarily impressive collection of Cranach exhibits, including 18 paintings, 10 drawings and 59 prints. After gaining an insight into Cranach’s work, visitors to the museum will then be able to detect Reformation motifs and themes, their continuation and transformation as they explore the rest of the museum.
