Bremen market square. In the foreground in the middle of the picture is a large paved pattern. Next to the pattern on the left are lots of chairs, tables and parasols. A little further back, but still in the middle, is Bremen Town Hall, whose ground-floor colonnade opens up onto the square. At the end of the square on the right is the city's Romanesque cathedral, which is made from bricks and sandstone.

Wümme Cycle Route – from Bremen out across Lüneburg Heath

This circular tour follows the river Wümme from its source to its confluence with the Weser. It has a northern route and a southern route and offers relaxed cycling between the North German Plain and the Weser as well as plenty to see and do along the way.

The charm of this route lies in the contrast between unspoilt nature, cultivated landscapes, and the buzz of big city life. It passes through idyllic villages such as Undeloh and Ahausen, where time almost appears to have stood still. The Wilsede living museum, for example, can only be reached on foot, by bike or by horse-drawn carriage. In the nearby climatic health resort of Schneverdingen the annual crowning of the Heath Queen is a major event enjoyed by the whole region. From the pretty little town of Rotenburg an der Wümme the route passes through the Fischerhude artists' colony and on through Bremen's biggest conservation area, the Borgfelder Wümmewiesen. The Deutschland, a sailing ship formerly used as a naval training vessel, is moored at Bremen-Vegesack and Bremen – the start and finish point of this route – is always worth a visit.

Terrain: Largely flat with some gently undulating sections on quiet grit tracks; some sandy and gently rising sections in the Lüneburg Heath conservation area.

Scenery: Varied moor and heathland, river plains, nature conservation areas, small villages and an artists' colony.
