In the 2,000 or so hospitals in Germany, the flat organisational hierarchies and intensive collaboration between specialist departments mean that patients receive comprehensive treatment at the cutting edge of research. Many hospitals have also set up additional services for international patients.
Münster University Hospital
The Department and Clinic of Paediatric Oncology at Münster University Hospital is one of the largest centres for paediatric oncology and haematology in Germany. It takes part in national and international treatment optimisation studies in paediatric oncology and haematology and carries out phase I and II clinical trials in paediatric oncology.
The Rinecker Proton Therapy Centre in Munich (RPTC) is Europe's first proton radiation facility to offer a complete hospital setting. Additional centres are planned for other cities and countries in the next few years. Open since March 2009, the Rinecker Proton Therapy Centre is equipped to treat up to 4,000 patients every year. The facility is CE-certified and has been officially approved as a healthcare provider by the Bavarian Environment Agency.
The University Medical Centre of the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz is the only facility of its kind in Rhineland-Palatinate. It encompasses more than 60 clinics, institutes and departments, combining patient care, vocational training and medical research. Around 3,500 medical and dental students receive training at Mainz University Medical Centre at any one time.
The Medical Department and Clinic III at the Carl Gustav Carus University Hospital in Dresden is one of the leading diabetes centres in Germany. It currently has the country's only active islet cell transplantation programme and is home to Europe's first chair for diabetes prevention. The hospital offers special programmes and therapies designed to identify the disease in its early stages, delay its onset and possibly even prevent it.
At two locations in the north and south of the city, Nuremberg Hospital offers the highest standards in all specialist fields of medicine and uses its expertise to establish networks for certain common illnesses. In keeping with the hospital's holistic approach to treatment, doctors from the 14 competence centres come to the patients instead of the other way around.
The Department of Neurosurgery at Duisburg Hospital, part of the Wedau Hospitals group, is one of the largest in Germany. It specialises in neurological conditions in adults and children that can be cured or alleviated by an operation. These include cerebral haemorrhages, brain tumours, tumours and other problems affecting the eye socket, tumours and deformities in children, slipped discs, spinal stenosis and spinal cord tumours.
The MediClin Robert Janker Clinic in Bonn is a specialist centre for the treatment of tumour-related diseases and a leading provider of radiotherapy and radio-oncology. This renowned clinic offers diagnostic radiology and neuroradiology as well as radiotherapy, in particular high-precision radiotherapy, for the treatment of benign and malignant tumours.
