Nuremberg Zoological Garden. Different every time.

Nuremberg's zoological gardens are a magnificent green space. The whole site covers 70 hectares and is home to more than 260 animal species and roughly ten times as many individual animals.

Over one million visitors a year enjoy a range of walks through the beautiful landscape of the zoo, which is situated in the Lorenz forest on the outskirts of Nürnberg. Extensive woodland and meadows with ponds and abandoned quarries have been transformed into spacious, naturalistic enclosures.

Many African and European hoofed animals such as giraffes, zebras, bison and deer roam almost entirely free here.

Nuremberg's dolphinarium is the only one in southern Germany. Dolphins and sea lions perform spectacular jumps from the water. But how are these animals trained? And are dolphins really as intelligent as people say? The dolphinarium can provide answers to these and many other questions.

Other popular attractions include the recently converted gorilla enclosure (2,000m²), the large wildcat enclosure and the new polar bear enclosure with its cubs born at the end of 2010.

Nuremberg Zoo is also very active in preservation projects, e.g. for endangered species. One example for this is Yaqu Pacha, a society founded at Nuremberg Zoo in 1992 which aims to protect water-based mammals in South America and to preserve their habitats.
