The proverbial German gemütlichkeit is difficult to explain. But you won't go far wrong if you think of good food, good company, a drink or two and plenty of time to enjoy it all!

People like to celebrate in Germany and they celebrate often. The word Feierabend that denotes the end of the working day literally means 'celebratory evening'. For a true taste of gemütlichkeit, visit the traditional inns and taverns. People still sit together on long benches, so it's easy to make new friends. Add to the mix a selection of regional dishes, one or two drinks and some music, and you have the perfect evening!
