Saarland

Company Profile

The Saarland – a small jewel in the heart of Europe
The Saarland has a unique location embedded between three countries: To the south-west lies France, its westerly tip touches Luxembourg, and to the north-east is Rhineland-

Palatinate.

No other German region has undergone such changes of allegiance during the past 200 years – at one time French, later an autonomous region and then again under German rule. However, the historical evidence found in the region takes us back a lot further: The Roman villa in Borg, for instance, an original reconstruction of a Roman estate, is an impressive reminder of the way people lived in Europe during the time of the Romans. The most recent history of the region, however, the period of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), is almost a thing of the past. The most important example of the Saarland's industrial heritage is the UNESCO World Heritage Site Völklinger Hütte, the world's only remaining ironworks dating from the heyday of the iron and steel industries. Saarland's varied natural landscape is best discovered on foot or by bike, for example by walking the Saar-Hunsrück trail or taking part in a gourmet bike tour.

Roman Villa Borg

Hot on the heels of the Romans…
The villa in Borg is an impressive example of how the Romans lived about 2,000 years ago. The reconstructed 'Villa Rustica' in Perl-Borg gives an insight into how members of the Roman gentry went about their daily life. The grand manor houses an archaeological museum containing many original finds and replicas. The estate with its outbuildings and the luxurious spa house, provides a unique insight into the splendours of that period.

Health, Active and Nature

Activity breaks
What are the ingredients for a truly unforgettable activity break?
First of all, take a good helping of an exceptionally beautiful slice of nature. Ideally, it should be a selection of open grassland and deep forests, towering rocks and babbling brooks. Voilà, take the Saarland. And in order to get really close to nature, you have to follow special paths. Of those, we have quite a few in the Saarland, each of them of the highest quality.

Cycling
The Saarland is a small region with big cycle lanes. What matters is not the vast choice of routes but the many possibilities opened up by a well-managed network and beautiful, everchanging landscape. Most of the routes avoid main roads and were especially chosen to bring the visitor closer to nature like the routes through the UNESCO biosphere reserve Bliesgau with beautiful meadows, splendid orchards and spacious beech groves. Or follow some of our border-crossing paths and experience our culture, our way of life and the unique atmosphere of this exceptional region at first hand.

“eVelo” Saarland
Simply get on! Get on your E-Bike and enjoy cycling in a different way: with the help of a soundless electric motor, you will leisurely master even the most difficult legs of your tour. Cycle up heights that you would not have dared to before, cycle in a group with the whole family (without anyone getting tired or being slower than the rest) or simply enjoy relaxed cycling. Rental stations, battery changing facilities and transport services for E-Bikes can be found throughout the Saarland region.

Saar-Hunsrück-Trail

The view from the lookout at Cloef down over the loop of the Saar and into the far distance of the river valley is a fantastic start to the trekking tour that is to follow. In front of your eyes, the 180 km (110 mile) long “Saar-Hunsrück-Steig” hiking trail from Mettlach-Orscholz to the city of gemstones, Idar-Oberstein, and the Roman town of Trier winds its way through the landscape. Take the new premium hiking-trail in Germany’s south-westerly corner and follow its winding paths through romantic river valleys and mysterious woods, over steep rocks and airy pastures littered with organic fruit trees.
