North Sea-Baltic Trail - From coast to coast on the North Sea to Baltic Trail

Great exercise in the great outdoors. If you want to discover all sides of Schleswig-Holstein, the North Sea-Baltic Trail is for you. This scenic route from the coast to coast cuts right across the Jutland peninsula in northern Germany.

The route passes through several areas of interest, including the once fortified town of Rendsburg and past Westensee nature reserve, taking in the extensive scenery of central Schleswig-Holstein. This 109km trail, which is suitable for beginners and seasoned walkers alike, shows Schleswig-Holstein‘s varied landscape in all its glory. The North Sea-Baltic Trail can be split into five separate stages or adjusted to suit individual abilities and circumstances.

Tip: Kiel Canal

From fens and sandy heathland to the hilly regions in the east, the trail intermittently follows the Kiel Canal. Here you’ll get quite close to the huge cruise liners that sail sedately along the canal. According to the angle you view them at, it can sometimes seem as if they are crossing by land.

At a glance:

  • Starts: Meldorf
  • Ends: Kiel
  • Length: 109km
  • Number of stages: 5
  • Altitude variation: ascent 770m, descent 760m
  • Terrain: 15% natural, 50% asphalt, 35% other, e.g. farm tracks
