Cabinet of Curiosities at Francke Foundations Halle

Discover the fascinating and diverse history of education spanning 300 years at the heart of the city of Halle and enjoy the year-round cultural itinerary featuring historical exhibitions, lectures, guided tours and festivals.

The orphanage created in the year 1700 by August Hermann Francke, along with its adjacent, predominantly half-timbered building complex that is home to Europe's largest half-timbered house, is an extraordinary cultural landmark of great significance within Europe that is being considered for UNESCO World Heritage status. The recreated Baroque collection of art and natural history is the only remaining cabinet of curiosities in Germany. The library building complete with its original stage-set shelving houses historical volumes from the 15th to the 18th century.

A collection of Canstein Bibles can also be found in amongst the library's historical stock. The Canstein Bible Institute, the first in the world, saw more than 10 million Bibles printed in various languages up to the 20th century. The Francke Foundations form a modern social institution of science, culture and learning with the aim of continuing Francke's legacy. Opening times: Tuesday to Sunday: 10 am–5 pm
