Historical Museum of the Palatinate Speyer

This museum features impressive collections documenting the history of the region as well as an exceptional, varied programme of special exhibitions on historical and cultural topics.

The Historical Museum of the Palatinate opposite Speyer's cathedral is one of the town's most spectacular attractions. With around one million exhibits in its portfolio, its five collections depict life in the Palatinate between the Stone Age and the present day. The "Prehistory" collection delves into the period from 200,000 to 20 BC, when the Romans conquered Germany and started their almost-500-year rule over the Palatinate. The "Roman Era" collection offers a vivid look at everyday life and beliefs in the Palatinate during an era that helped define the region.

Visitors can also marvel at a wine amphora from this time period as part of the "Wine Museum" collection. The "Cathedral Treasure" is ideal for anyone with an interest in the Middle Ages since it features burial crowns and objects buried with rulers from the Salian Dynasty. And the "Modern Era" covers the chapter of Palatinate history from around 1500 to the 1930s. Opening times: Tuesday to Sunday: 10 am–6 pm
