Neuschwanstein Castle, one of the most famous and most photographed sights in Germany, captivated a staggering 1.4 million visitors in 2011. That makes the fairytale castle the number one attraction in Bavaria, according to the Bavarian Department of State-owned Palaces, Gardens and Lakes, whose attractions are visited by a total of five million people a year.
Neuschwanstein Castle, which was commissioned by King Ludwig II in 1869, enjoys a spectacular location on steep rocks overlooking the town of Füssen in southern Bavaria.
