The St. Wendel Christmas market and medieval market, based around the town hall, cathedral and in the pedestrian precinct, with their fantastically decorated wooden huts and medieval goings-on have long been well known. Tradesmen and craftsmen in historic clothing take you on a romantic and mystical trip through time. Every afternoon, the Three Wise Men's train of camels makes its way through the town accompanied by musicians and fire eaters. On arrival at the beautifully decorated stable, actors in brightly coloured costumes perform the story of Mary and Joseph. Children’s eyes shine when they’re allowed to climb into Father Christmas’ slay with his reindeer and ride down the hill on real snow or go on a treasure hunt, eat Stockbrot (bread on a stick), spin thread or do archery in the tent area. An ice sculptor creates wonderful ice sculptures and fire mages conjure up columns of fire and circles of sparks and make the ice sculptures dance. The impressive music-fire-dance-show draws everyone into its path. Other highlights are the giant Christmas pyramid, the dwarf wood with 200 little men decked out in conical hats, the “heavenly mile”, with life-size figures from the Erzgebirge, trumpet sounding every evening at 7.30pm in front of the basilica, the great nativity scene exhibition and much more.
