Hellabrunn Zoo in Munich The world's first 'geo zoo'.

Hellabrunn is no ordinary zoological garden, it is an institution. One of the largest and most beautiful zoos in Germany, it provides a home to 17,000 animals in breathtaking natural surroundings. – the next best thing to an actual trip across continents.

When the Hellabrunn Zoological Gardens first opened on 1 August 1911 no one could have foreseen what a delightful place it would be 100 years later. However, the foundations had been laid right at the start – the site in the Isarauen conservation area was a perfect choice. Within this unique, unspoilt environment the animals live in spacious surroundings modelled on their natural habitats, amidst scenic streams and canals.

Hellabrunn was the first zoological garden in the world that did not separate animals by species but grouped them together according to their natural habitats – a 'geo zoo' from the outset. Thanks to the combination of spectacular scenery and this pioneering concept, visitors enjoy close-up encounters with animals in a naturalistic setting that could otherwise only be experienced in the wild. Large aviaries, 18 metres high and covering 5,000 square metres, magnificent coral reefs in the aquarium, a spectacular elephant enclosure, the impressive orang-utan enclosure, the stunning jungle tent for lions and their compatriots and many other highlights make Hellabrunn a memorable experience for all ages.
