Long-distance routes and tour tips
Explore the many aspects of the Emsland, a region that unites wide expanses of natural beauty with enthralling insights into the history of mankind – from the Stone Age to the present day.
The first half of the tour runs alongside the river Ems between Rheine and Papenburg, through Meppen with its architectural monuments dating from a wide range of periods and into the river port of Haren with its historical museum ships. The region also boasts the largest area of moorland in Germany. These once eerie, almost sinister places now serve as nature reserves and recreation areas. The other half of the tour takes you through forests and heathland with megalithic gravesites dating back to the Stone Age. Engineering enthusiasts will love the museum railway, historical windmills and Meyer shipyard in Papenburg.
Terrain: the route follows the Ems river through moorland and forests. After passing through the densely wooded Hümmling region, it continues into the southern Emsland with its meadows and farmhouses. Mostly asphalt paths with no steep climbs.
Scenery: riverside meadows in the west, flat moorland in the south-west, shady woods in the gently rolling north-east, rural countryside in the south.
