Friedericianum Museum

This magnificent edifice in Kassel, a monument to the Enlightenment spirit, became one of the first public museums on mainland Europe after it was completed in 1779.

The building, designed by Simon Louis du Ry at the behest of Frederick the Great, originally housed the Landgrave library as well as the art, antiquity and natural history collections. These days it is the focal point of the documenta art exhibition, which is held every five years. Between documentas the Fridericianum hosts exhibitions for the Kasseler Kunstverein and Fridericianum Kunsthalle galleries.
