Sensation − Propaganda − Resistance: Luther, the Pamphlet, and the Consequences

Without the medium of the leaflet, Martin Luther's reformatory ideas would never have achieved the resonance required to make him one of the most important protagonists of the modern era. In the 16th century the leaflet was a mass medium made possible through the invention of moveable type printing which allowed current topics to be reported on, and thus represented a completely new form of publicity. The exhibition is devoted to the history of the leaflet from 1517 (when Luther wrote his Ninety Five Theses) up to the present day. It examines the social power of leaflets and also looks at the proliferation of messages in the digital age which the modern-day general public will be familiar with.
