Bourtanger Moor-Bargerveen International Nature Park – a cross-border world of discovery

Situated between Emsland, Bentheim and the Dutch province of Drenthe, what used to be the largest continuous moorland in central Europe enjoys a unique ecosystem.

This extraordinary nature reserve is a multicoloured mosaic of ochre sand and heather-coloured heathland, of inky moors and peat bogs, of verdant meadows and golden fields of grain. It serves as a habitat for endangered flora and fauna, and as a place for people to explore nature and discover a treasure trove of natural and man-made phenomena.

In this cross-border world of discovery extending into the Netherlands, natural and cultural treasures know no boundaries. Since the reserve was founded in 2006, its members have aimed to develop the area sustainably and realise its full potential. The 140 square kilometres of the reserve offer visitors from both sides of the border excellent hiking and cycling routes.

As well as by car, the reserve can be explored by bike or on foot along wide, flat and well-signposted routes that are suitable for novice walkers and cyclists. The reserve also contains educational and interactive family-friendly routes dealing with moor-related themes – perfect for a tour of discovery.
