Ummanz, Rügen's small sister island in the Baltic Sea, has a special ambiance of calm and tranquillity. With its charming fishing villages and unspoilt scenery, it offers everything you need for a relaxing break.
Ummanz lies just off the coast of Rügen in the Baltic Sea and belongs to the federal state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The island has been connected to Rügen via a long bridge since 1901. Ummanz is extremely flat and its 20 square kilometres of land are constantly awash with water from the shallow lagoons, or Bodden, around Rügen. As a result, the island – composed largely of pastureland, meadows and crop fields – is barely three metres above sea level. For years now, Ummanz's unspoilt countryside, sculpted by fishing and agriculture, has been captivating an ever increasing number of tourists.
Ummanz is situated in the Western-Pomeranian Boddenlandschaft National Park , and is surrounded by a large number of other small islands including Urkevitz, Wührens, Mährens, Heuwiese and the Lieschow peninsula, where holidaymakers can watch herons, geese, cormorants and eagles undisturbed. The village of Waase is located immediately before the bridge over the Focker Channel that links Ummanz to Rügen. This, the island's largest settlement, is where holidaymakers can find out all they need to know about Ummanz and pick up a few tips on how best to explore the island by bike. A great place to start is Waase's own village church. Seemingly nondescript on the outside, it contains an exquisite carved alter that was made in Antwerp in 1520 and was originally intended for Stralsund on the mainland. After various other activities such as horse riding, fishing and pedal boating, there is no better place to relax and enjoy some delicious local food than in one of the island's fish restaurants. Ummanz, with its wonderful holiday homes, is a great destination for the whole family.
