On this route between Donaueschingen and Contrexéville, nature's palette ranges through every shade of green – from the forests of the Vosges and the Black Forest mountains, through the foothill areas and down to the Rhine valley. There are many exceptional cultural and historical sites to discover as well. The 'ribbon of friendship' route is perfect for cyclists and walkers but it also has plenty to tempt gourmets: the rustic pleasures of a ferme auberge (farm inn), wine growers' inns selling home-grown Baden wine, regional specialities and numerous award-winning restaurants, not forgetting the excellent vintages from the sun-blessed Upper Rhine wine-growing region. At Titisee-Neustadt you can enjoy the crystal-clear waters of Lake Titisee, after which the route leads to Hinterzarten, through 'hell valley' and to Kirchzarten, the centre of the Dreisam valley. Next stop on the route is Freiburg with its picturesque old quarter, charming Bächle und Gässle (little streams and alleyways) and a Gothic minster. We then continue through the Tuniberg region, known for its wine and sekt producers, to Breisach, which holds the honorary title of 'Europe town'. After crossing the Rhine, the route reaches Neuf-Brisach, the 'town of Sun King Louis XIV'. Here the star-shaped fortress complex built at the turn of the 17th/18th century is still very well preserved. The best way to appreciate the numerous highlights along the Route Verte/Green Route is to come and see them for yourself.
