The Hermannshöhen (literally ‘Hermann’s Rise’) is made up of two ridge walks – the Hermannsweg and the Eggeweg. One of the most beautiful walking trails in Germany, it has been awarded the ‘Wanderbares Deutschland’ seal of quality.
At the mystical Externsteine fissured rocks near Horn-Bad Meinberg, the Hermannsweg meets the Eggeweg, which runs for almost 70 kilometres on unspoilt paths through the Egge hills, a region known for its wealth of beech trees and deciduous forests. From the Externsteine fissured rocks, you head south following the wooded ridge trail, which offers a number of beautiful vistas across broad valleys. En route to Ober-Marsberg in the Diemel valley, an abundance of natural and cultural treasures await discovery, such as Iburg Castle near Bad Driburg, the ‘Egge cathedral’ and the Karlsschanze fortress.
Tip: Externsteine fissured rocks
The Externsteine are a grouping of fissured sandstone rocks that rise up sharply at the edge of a lake. It is not clear whether this mystical place was a spiritual site in pre-Christian times. The modern information centre is well worth a visit and offers a fascinating insight into the history of the rocks.
