Gorges Trail: through the dramatic gorges of the Southern Black Forest nature reserve

This trail is a succession of narrow paths, dramatic climbs and tranquil forest trails. Narrow inclines between steep mountain sides lead through Wutach gorge, Räuberschlössle rocks, Haslach ravine and Wehra gorge.

The Gorges Trail runs from east to west through some of the prettiest landscapes of the Black Forest. One of the great things about this route is its diversity. Even the three days it takes to walk the Wutach cliffs and gorge offer wildly varying scenery: first the dizzying Wutach cliffs, followed by lush ancient woodland in Germany's largest canyon and then waterfalls, wild ravines and rubble slopes that would seem far removed from civilisation were it not for the occasional whistling of the Höllentalbahn or 'hell valley railway'. But the Gorges Trail is by no means just a valley route. In fact it is a succession of narrow paths, dramatic climbs and tranquil forest trails, regularly ascending to rocky ledges and lofty summits. There are frequent views across gorges that have just been negotiated or those still left to tackle. From wide-open plateaus and panoramic views from mountain tops to unspoilt gorges and valleys, highland moors and natural lakes, the Gorges Trail explores the unique landscapes typical of the southern Black Forest – making it ideal for walking enthusiasts.

Windberg waterfall
What makes Windberg waterfall in the Windberg gorge so impressive is its size: the water plunges over a mighty rock face and pours down in a number of torrents. The Gorges Trail follows the bubbling water course, crossing over the stream several times.
