Viaduct Trail: a walk through railway history

The 29km Viaduct Trail around Altenbeken sets the fascinating history of the railways against a beautiful natural backdrop.

Railway enthusiasts have always regarded Altenbeken as a gem. The town, the gateway to the Egge Hills, is increasingly attracting visitors interested in its railway heritage. Soak up the atmosphere as you admire the towering railway viaduct, station buildings, triangle of tracks, Rehberg tunnel and the 044 steam locomotive, which now stands as a museum piece in the town centre. Every evening, the viaduct's soaring arches are illuminated, transforming it into a spectacular art and light installation. A viewing point above the viaduct is ideal for taking unusual photographs of the railway. Why not combine a visit to this railway town with a walk on the Viaduct Trail? The well-maintained, clearly signed paths offer stunning views of the railway viaduct – the largest stone railway bridge in Europe.
