Gutenberg Museum Mainz

The Gutenberg Museum, an exhibition devoted to the history of printing, offers an in-depth insight into the fascinating world of the printing press invented by Johannes Gutenberg in Mainz.

Visitors can experience the history of printing, books and type live at one of the world's oldest museums dedicated to the history of books and the printed word. It is situated at the heart of Mainz's Old Town, just opposite the cathedral. The museum focuses on Johannes Gutenberg and his inventions. For example, the museum's precious collection includes two original Gutenberg Bibles that date back to the middle of the 15th century and are widely regarded as some of the finest books of all time. The reconstruction of Gutenberg's workshop is another main attraction, with hourly demonstrations revealing what the printing process would have been like in Gutenberg's day.

Printing presses from many different centuries are on display too. In fact, visitors have ample opportunity to learn all about printing techniques from within Europe and further afield, book design, paper and type through the ages and the history of the press. Temporary special exhibitions also showcase examples of modern book and printing designs and typography, bringing the museum right into the 21st century. Opening times: Tuesday to Saturday: 9 am–5 pm, Sunday: 11 am–5 pm
