Until shortly before the Wall came down, iron ore from the Saar region’s mines was processed here. In 1994 the decommissioned facility began a new lease of life – as the first industrial monument to be recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Völklingen – the last surviving ironworks from the heyday of industrialisation – is today the most visited cultural attraction in a region that boasts an abundance of sightseeing opportunities.
