Centre for Art and Media Technology Karlsruhe

The Centre for Art and Media Technology in Karlsruhe – also known as the ZKM – is one of the world's leading museums, having been ranked in the top 10 museums in the world by ArtFacts.

When the New York Times reviewed the ZKM, their verdict was: "Just don't call it a museum". What makes the centre so special is its focus on the electronic arts. And so it is home to the largest collection of video art in Europe, an extensive selection of work involving electronic music and the world's biggest collection of computer-based art.

The centre has been floating risky concepts and promoting and displaying digital art for 30 years now. Karlsruhe, the city the ZKM calls home, recently became the first German city to be accepted into the Creative Cities Network by UNESCO. And it's not all digital at the ZKM. The collection touches on all artistic genres, including painting and sculpture. Add the countless documents offering more in-depth insights into historical happenings into the mix and a multifaceted perspective of art and history in the 20th and 21st centuries is opened up. Opening times: Wednesday to Friday: 9 am–6 pm, Saturday and Sunday: 11 am–6 pm
